Customer Rating: Summary: Timeless Eats Comment: I travel to eat and, with this guide in hand, I ate memorably in a different restaurant or trattoria every night for weeks in Venice and Rome. The author's listings are, for the most part, unique to this book and evaluate an establishment's menu, service, ambience and location. (All locations are easy to find.) Her reviews are well written and reliable: she has eaten repeatedly at every restaurant that she lists.
This book allows those with discerning palettes to dine well in the company of in-the-know natives. If you want Italy's best cuisine, then get the Michelin guide. If you're on a tighter budget, you cannot do better with any other restaurant guide. (Friends who live in Rome were so impressed by the author's reviews of the restaurants already known to them that they were eager to try several others from the previous edition of this book that they asked for my copy of it.)
Customer Rating: Summary: Helpful Comment: The book was helpful while in Rome 2005. Mio dio, we were only actually able to locate two of the restaurants reviewed, however, each place was well worth the price of the book.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good . . . Comment: This is a good book and it helped me on trips to Italy 8+ years ago, but it desperately needs to be updated (and updated more often).
Customer Rating: Summary: Sandra Gustafso's Great Eats Italy: Florence,Rome,Venice, 5th Ed. Comment: This is, unfortunately, somewhat dated by her "lire" designations. Makes it hard to know what's what. The places I recognized, she had reviewed accurately and appropriately.
Customer Rating: Summary: Very Reliable Comment: I just got back from 16 days in Venice, Florence, and Rome and I took the suggestions from this book many times and was pleased each time. I agree that in these very touristy places it is easy to go wrong. It is nice to have a dependable opinion to rely upon in foreign cities. I also found the maps and neighborhood descriptions to be helpful and accurate.
