Editorial Reviews:

The Ethical Travel Guide is a natural follow-up to Tourism Concern’s hugely successful “Good Alternative Travel Guide” – it is the essential global resource for responsible travelers.

Find hundreds of new ideas for your next holiday and visit amazing communities not listed in other guidebooks. If you are tired of tourist traps and "guilt trips," or just want to have a positive impact on local people and their environment, this book is for you.

The extensive directory in this new Guide lists places to visit and stay in over sixty countries and other useful resources chosen by Tourism Concern for anyone interested in ethical and sustainable tourism – “because tourism should always benefit local people.” Chapters cover the definition of ethical tourism, what’s wrong with traditional tourism, a case study focusing on The Gambia, why it’s important to be an ethical consumer, and globalization and its effect on travel. Travel planning tips and a directory of destinations are supplemented by additional resources and a section for tour directors.

This practical guide includes destinations throughout the world, including in the United States for a wide variety of vacations, from horseback riding to beach resorts to Native American tribal homelands. The directory entries include facility descriptions, activities offered, suggested conduct, costs, and access. Web links, addresses, and phone numbers make it easy to pursue further details and to book reservations.

Summary: not much in the US
Comment: I skimmed through this one in a bookstore, trying to decide between it and Lonely Planet Code Green.

This one definitely seemed to have the advantage in terms of unique and diverse travel ideas. It's longer and fits more ideas into each page.

But it had only one page on ethical travel in the US. At least 65% of it was devoted to Africa and Asia. There must be some ethical travel opportunities that don't require an international flight.

If you're looking for unique ideas and can affford international travel, get this book. But it doesn't have much to offer nearby.

As a side note, the glossier Lonely Planet Code Green, though it has more ideas in the US, is also far from perfect (see my review of that book for more detail).

Summary: A host of alternative opportunities
Comment: THE ETHICAL TRAVEL GUIDE: YOUR PASSPORT TO EXCITING ALTERNATIVE HOLIDAYS is for any sick of tourist traps and guilt trips - or who want to use their tourism dollars to have a positive impact on local people. From construction projects in Tibet to ecolodge accommodations, THE ETHICAL TRAVEL GUIDE offers a host of alternative opportunities.
