Editorial Reviews:

Once upon a time, ‘Sin City’ attracted a different sort of visitor. Spanish explorers were the first to come to this desert oasis to enjoy its natural hot springs and named the spot Las Vegas, or ‘the meadows.’ Now just a century after it was founded in 1905, Las Vegas is the fastest growing metropolitan area in the US. See just how much has changed in Las Vegas Then & Now.
  • Fascinating then-and-now photographs capture the city’s evolution from desert railroad outpost to the gambling and entertainment capital of the world.
  • Las Vegas remained a quiet, small town until 1931 when two events forever changed its course: the building of Hoover Dam and the legalization of gambling.
  • Photos from the 1940s illustrate the most dramatic development in the city with resort-style hotels and casinos popping up on the strip, including Bugsy Siegel’s Flamingo.
  • Fans of neon will enjoy views of “Glitter Gulch” — Fremont Street’s famed stretch — as it was in the glory years of the 50s and as it is today.
  • Includes ‘now’ photos taken in September 2006 and the most up-to-date information about casino closures and new projects slated for 2006/2007.

Summary: Step back in time...
Comment: for those of you who travel often to Las Vegas, this book brings the past to life. Over the years I've gotten to know the town pretty good but when I finally bought this book, I realized just how much I didn't know. It truly is an amazing 20th century town to city story.

Summary: Great little picture book
Comment: This is a great THEN and NOW picture book. The "then" photo is contained on the left page, and the "now" photo is on the facing right page. A one paragraph description is bellow each photograph.

As expected, most the photos reflect the evolution of the hotel-casinos, both on the strip and downtown. There are a few non-hotel photos, but these are probably of limited interest for us Vegas tourists.

The only real disappointment is the size of the book. It is very SMALL. I did not notice the dimensions on Amazon page, and I wrongly assumed this was a larger format.

Summary: Viva Las Vegas
Comment: It's a nice big book with plenty of contrasting photos of various locales in Las Vegas.

Each photo, old and new, comes with a brief description and/or historical fact of the structure or location. The info is informative and interesting.

While I enjoyed the photos that were presented, the format makes it too "black and white". So basically you get the very beginning photo and then the most current photo(usually in the 21st century).

Would've been nice if they could've included some transition photos, as a lot of casinos went thru various changes throughout the years.

Overall though, I enjoyed the book as it managed to evoke my deep memories of Sin City.
