Filipinos came to Vallejo as early as 1912, and some families here can count five generations back to their roots in the Philippines. Many came to Mare Island Naval Shipyard, where Filipinos found steady, well-paying jobs that spared them from menial work and stoop labor in the fields of California. With each major conflict of the 20th century, and finally with the relaxation of immigration quotas in 1965, waves of Filipino newcomers arrived on these shores. They advanced in their work at the shipyards, settled down, and started families, buying homes and establishing successful businesses. Now this active, politically empowered Filipino community numbers in the tens of thousands, yet traditional histories ignore its contribution to Vallejos heritage.

Summary: great pictures and captions
Comment: The book has great pictures and captions. However, I bought it as a part of research and would have liked to see some facts with the captions. Other than that, it was great, I came from vallejo and feel proud that there's a strong filipino community from vallejo and that it's acknowledged in this book. I would recommend it to everyone who comes from vallejo and is Filipino. I would recommend it to history teachers. It's our history.

Comment: But it does show you the history of Filipinos in Vallejo. I'm proud to be a 2nd generation Filipino American living in this city. We will continue to cultivate and flourish because of our roots and culture.

Summary: A trip down memory lane
Comment: Reading this book brought back a lot of fun memories of growing up in Vallejo in the '60's and '70's. Appreciate all the efforts that were put into this book.

Summary: Learning some history
Comment: I enjoyed looking thru this book and seeing my father & the "Manongs" of my childhood and learning of their roles in the history of Filipino's in Vallejo. It made me proud to be a descendent of these great men that set a foundation for the "Filipino Community of Vallejo."
