WICKED above her hipbone, GIRL across her heart Words are like a road map to reporter Camille Preaker’s troubled past. Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, Camille’s first assignment from the second-rate daily paper where she works brings her reluctantly back to her hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls.
NASTY on her kneecap, BABYDOLL on her leg Since she left town eight years ago, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful thirteen-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed again in her family’s Victorian mansion, Camille is haunted by the childhood tragedy she has spent her whole life trying to cut from her memory.
HARMFUL on her wrist, WHORE on her ankle As Camille works to uncover the truth about these violent crimes, she finds herself identifying with the young victims—a bit too strongly. Clues keep leading to dead ends, forcing Camille to unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past to get at the story. Dogged by her own demons, Camille will have to confront what happened to her years before if she wants to survive this homecoming.
With its taut, crafted writing, Sharp Objects is addictive, haunting, and unforgettable.
From the Hardcover edition.

Customer Rating: Summary: Engrossing Read!!! Comment: This book would be an engrossing read from an author of stature so I was amazed to discover that it was a first effort for Ms. Flynn. It definitely had three ingredients that make for a surefire good read - a page-turner, quality prose, and psychological suspense.
In short the plot is about a young woman named Camille, who works for a non-major newspaper, who goes back to her hometown to investigate the murder of two children. She does this reluctantly because of her distant and dysfunctional relationship with her mother and step-father. She has a dead sibling who was lost during her youth, and a half-sister she hardly knows. The book interweaves her relationship with her family and effort to find the murderer.
What I loved most is that Ms. Flynn came up with some modern, intriguing, and less "worn out" ideas for her story. For example, Camille is a cutter who actually cuts words all over her body. We slowly learn that her mother has Munchausen by Proxy, a disease which is accurately depicted and explained. Unlike many novels, the potential love object for Camille doesn't end up falling for her because he is bothered once he sees her body. Most importantly, the killer of the children is unexpected and not revealed until the very end!
Customer Rating: Summary: Loved this book Comment: I loved this book. My only complaint about it might be that it wasn't long enough, because I wasn't nearly ready for it to end. I really enjoyed Camille and would like to see more of her, even though I don't get the feeling there's a sequel in the works. Fascinating character studies, and just a great, juicy mystery.
Customer Rating: Summary: Mesmerizing Comment: This book is amazing. I read it when i was only 16 and I can honestly say the book found me. After reading sharp objects, i became hungry for more thrillers and mysteries. I strongly recommend it. Ive lend it to all my classmates and they've loved it too.
Customer Rating: Summary: Kinda boring Comment: The book is short but I struggled to finish it, and I'm an avid reader. The ending was really not all that surprising. Also, the character development felt forced and unnatural. I would not recommend this book.
Customer Rating: Summary: Un-put-downable Comment: Have to agree with a lot of the other reviewers that it was difficult to believe this was a first novel. The writing was wonderfully vivid and dead-on, and the characters, believable and haunting. I was sucked right into the story from page one, and though I'm normally not drawn to such dark topics, I couldn't put it down. Ms. Flynn isn't afraid to show the uglier sides of life in a way that makes you at once repulsed and sympathetic. With "Sharp Objects" she has written an incredibly perceptive book and I can't wait to read her others!
