Now in its sixth edition, Modern Latin America is a lively interpretive history and the leading text in the field. Thoroughly updated and revised, the book includes a new chapter on the history of Colombia from the wars of independence to the violent conflicts of the present day. It also examines such topics as: * the impact of 9/11 on U.S.-Latin American relations * globalization * drug trafficking * women's roles in society and politics * the fragility and uncertainty of democracy in Latin America The book features sociocultural sections and boxes in nearly every chapter, covering such diverse areas as the psychology of exile, Santeria in Cuba, baseball in the Dominican Republic, and the popularity of Latin music in the U.S. All political and economic information has been updated. As in earlier editions, the authors use an in-depth case study approach that guides readers through the major countries of Latin America, highlighting central themes including European-New World interaction, racial mixtures, military takeovers, and United States intervention in the area. With an insightful look into the future, Modern Latin America, Sixth Edition, will continue to be an exceptional text for undergraduate courses on contemporary Latin American history, society, and politics.

Customer Rating: Summary: Packed with Info... Lacking in Intrigue Comment: In my college going career, I have never crossed a book written by someone that is clearly so knowledgeable... unfortunately, the author is also so incredibly boring that I can't believe that they've read their own book. This one is a snoozer and I struggle to get through it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Insightful and Brilliant Comment: Thomas Skidmore is simply a genius. Modern Latin America brings a insightful and precise analysis of Latin America. Skidmore is neither superficial nor boring. He presents the reader a very smart and interesting analysis of Latin America. After reading this book one gets pretty much the idea of why "There is no sin south the Equator".
Customer Rating: Summary: Latin American History Text Comment: I'm studying Latin American history at the University of Buenos Aires this semester and found the Skidmore text to be an excellent supplement to my assigned Spanish readings. It does a very good job tying together a lot of the overlying themes throughout the continent during this time period, helping me to better understand the more analytical texts in my course.
Customer Rating: Summary: A great start to Latin American History Comment: This is an excellent textbook for anyone who wants a summary of Latin America. It covers all of the regions in very clear detail and excellent prose. You hardly feel like you are reading a text book at all. For those who have no background in Latin American history this is a great place to start. For those who have read widely they will find this an invaluable summary and an essential addition to any Latin American History library.
Customer Rating: Summary: Learn Latin America Comment: Very good book. It gives us a real idea of what was and is Latin America (since the enviroment is very much dinamic the last/last issues are not incorpoated in the book). Worth!
